FAQ’s

  • The Central Coast Health & Wellbeing Living Lab is an innovative approach to improving the lives of older people in our community. It's a collaborative space where real-world challenges meet creative solutions.

Imagine a place where an older person’s experience with loneliness can spark a conversation that leads to a new community program, where a carer's struggle with technology inspires a local start-up to design a user-friendly app or where a healthcare worker collaborates with a technology provider to design a new medication dispensing device to help older people stay health at home. That's what our Living Lab does.

We bring together a diverse group of people – older people, carers, healthcare professionals, researchers, businesses, and community organisations – to identify challenges, brainstorm ideas, and create practical solutions for healthy ageing. Our current focus is on enhancing community connections, recognising how vital social bonds are to overall wellbeing.

What sets us apart is our commitment to testing ideas in real-life settings. Instead of developing solutions in isolation, we work directly with the people who will use them, ensuring that our innovations truly meet the needs of our community. It's an ongoing process of learning, creating, and improving – all with the goal of making the Central Coast a better place to grow older.

  • The Living Lab is about turning community needs into practical solutions.

    1. First, we engage with older people, carers, and service providers to understand current challenges.

    2. Next, we bring together community members, healthcare professionals, researchers, and innovators to generate ideas.

    3. Promising ideas are developed into solutions, that are then tested in everyday situations.

    4. We carefully assess the results, refining approaches that show promise.

    5. Finally, we support partnerships to allow successful innovations to be implemented into the community.

Throughout this process, we maintain open channels of communication, ensuring our work remains relevant and responsive to community needs.

  • Getting involved with the Living Lab can take many forms, and we value every type of involvement.

For older people and carers, your experiences are invaluable. By sharing your stories, challenges, and ideas, you help us understand what really matters. You might find yourself discussing your daily routines in a focus group, trying out a new community app on your smartphone, or giving feedback on a proposed service.

Healthcare professionals bring their expertise to the table, helping to identify health challenges and evaluate potential solutions. You might be involved in designing new technology to support care in the home or implementing innovative ideas in your practice.

Service providers contribute invaluable knowledge about our community, the challenges faced by older people and what you see as potential solutions. This knowledge is essential for ensuring our solutions work in the real world.

Researchers play a crucial role in studying ageing-related issues and analysing the data we collect. You might like to partner with us to validate a new product, or work together on a grant application for a research project. We can help you connect with the community, businesses and healthcare providers and your work helps ensure our projects are grounded in solid evidence and contributes to the broader field of healthy ageing research.

For businesses and entrepreneurs, the Living Lab offers a unique opportunity to co-create and test new products or services. You might work alongside older people to refine your ideas, or collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure your innovations meet real needs.

Regardless of your background, your contribution matters. Whether you're able to offer a one-time survey response or commit to a long-term project, your input helps shape a better future for ageing on the Central Coast. The beauty of the Living Lab is that it brings all these perspectives together, creating a rich tapestry of ideas and experiences that lead to meaningful innovations.

  • The Living Lab is designed to accommodate various levels of involvement. Your commitment can be as minimal as responding to a single survey or as extensive as participating in a long-term project.

For older people and carers, we value your lived experience more than anything else. Your commitment might involve sharing your thoughts in a focus group, trying out a new service in your daily life, or providing regular feedback over time. No special skills are needed – your perspective is what's most important.

Healthcare professionals and service providers can contribute their expertise in many ways. You might attend an occasional workshop, integrate new solutions into your practice, or collaborate on developing new technologies. While your professional knowledge is valuable, an openness to innovative approaches is equally important.

Researchers play a crucial role, with commitments ranging from short consultations to multi-year projects. We are keen to work with researchers from all backgrounds, that could include researchers focused on health and ageing, communications, technology acceptance, evaluation, the list goes on. What matters most is your willingness to work with diverse stakeholders and engage on projects that have real-world impact.

Businesses and innovators might take part in a single brainstorming session or engage in long-term product development. While technical expertise and resources for prototyping can be beneficial, we also value fresh perspectives and creative thinking.

Service providers and community organisations often serve as vital links between the Living Lab and the broader community. Your involvement might include helping to implement initiatives or providing spaces for testing new ideas. Strong community connections and the ability to mobilise local resources are particularly valuable.

Regardless of your background, the key requirements for all participants are an open mind, a willingness to collaborate, and a commitment to improving the lives of older people on the Central Coast. The Living Lab is about bringing diverse perspectives together, and your unique contribution – whatever form it takes – is what makes our work possible and impactful.
